Disney, Marvel, and 4 Billion Dollars

By now you have probably heard that the Disney Corporation has entered into a 4 billion dollar purchase agreement with Marvel Comics.  That’s right, Spiderman, Hulk, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Avengers, Captain America, and all the rest are now the property of Mickey Mouse.  It is an incredible move in the entertainment and theme park industries.  Here are my questions and concerns:

The most obvious concern for me (The Beast) is what this means for Marvel Super Hero Island in Islands of Adventure at Universal Studios.  Islands of Adventure has historically been the favorite park for RATB .com and Marvel Super Hero Island is a big part of that.  I have spent some time perusing the different forums and news sites since I read of the deal between Disney and Marvel.  The bottom line is that no one knows for sure the details of Universal’s agreement with Marvel and the use of the Marvel name, characters, merchandise, etc.  Some are saying that the deal was made indefinitely, so that as long as the park was running, Universal could use the Marvel name.  Even if that were the case, it seems fairly obvious that Disney will not be granting Universal, their biggest competitor, any additional permission to use the characters in MSHI.  So, that means no more new attractions, shows, etc that bear the name Marvel.  How long could MSHI maintain its appeal without any additions or changes?  Well, for a good long while I hope, but eventually things will have to change.

The other concern is what Disney will do with the comic book aspect of Marvel.  My hopes are that Disney is more interested in the profit and not so much a “re-imaging” of the Marvel Universe.  You want to see some ticked off comic book fans, then start making some of the beloved Marvel heroes more into a fairy-tale princess.  Not good things will happen.  I am not worried about that, however, Disney is not that stupid.  I think.

So, this is a big move.  What are your thoughts?  Rex and I will be discussing this soon on a new podcast, so let us know what you think about the purchase.
