Most Surprising Thing from Florida Leg of Festival of Fear 2010

Well, the Beast and I have been hammered with work and other life events since we came back from Florida, so the reviews, podcasts and videos are still being finalized and edited…but will be up soon.

In the meantime, I wanted to briefly discuss what I thought was the most surprising thing from the entire Florida leg of the Festival of Fear 2010 tour.  That was: the success of "Alone", the upcharge haunted attraction at Howl-O-Scream that you (and up to three of your friends) go through alone.

The Beast and I attended Howl-O-Scream on a Thursday night and although it was busy, it was by no means packed.  We had front of line passes and needed them for only one haunt all night.  However, when we went by the Alone house prior to the official opening of HOS, it was already sold out for the night….and had been sold out every night so far!

Now, this just blew me and the Beast away.  We would have been less surprised to have seen no one there.  We thought that the pricey upcharge would keep this from being a packed house, but we were wrong.  Fortunately, we were able to get on a waiting list and managed to experience Alone around Midnight (I'm not going to go into detail on the haunt experience here, that's coming later…but it was great), but the waiting list was 30+ people for what ended up being 6-7 openings.  Just amazing.

So, with the great success of Alone, will we see this at HHN or at other haunts?  Very possibly.  But, taking the price into account ($35), the number of people per hour (16), the number of hours approximately each night (6), and the number of nights (16) you get $53,760–not chump change, but hardly enought to get HHN excited about building an extra haunt just for the sake of that haunt (as opposed to getting buzz for the event in general, etc.).  Also, HHN gets so many more people, that I think you would have more people ticked off (because they didn't get it or had to pay more) than pumped by the extra attraction and HHN may not see that as worth it.  The Beast and I will discuss this on a future podcast.

Anyway, if you went through Alone, let us know what you thought.  Was it worth $25 extra dollars?  Did you like the concept and would you like to see more of that concept?

'til next time…Join the Journey!
