As I was perusing my Facebook page, I noticed a new "fun fact" update from Universal Orlando Resort in Florida. It said, "the animatronic Imhotep on Revenge of the Mummy is 6'8" and weighs 650 lbs." Pretty cool fun fact. I wonder if Universal was prepared for what would follow in the 57 comments. To give you an idea, the very first comment to that "fun fact" said, "it is also in need of repair."
I think I would be hard pressed to think of an aspect of a major theme park ride that has decayed as quickly as the Imhotep figure at the beginning of ROTM. I suppose the yeti at Expedition Everest would make the list, but that is a different scenario; they were having technical difficulties and finally just "turned him off." With Imhotep, it seems that every aspect of the effectiveness of the animatronic has been compromised in some way, and Universal has yet to do anything about it.
I can vividly remember my first ride on ROTM and likewise my first impression of Imhotep. I was blown away by the life-like motion of his hands and body. He came across as a menacing force to be reckoned with. Today, it is almost embarrassing to watch as he comes out of the coffin. I am not alone in this assessment. Another comment on the aforementioned thread said, "when it does work, he limps out of the coffin and looks like something from Six Flags." That is dead-on right. I'm not sure what happened and how quickly something can go from looking so spectacular to so lame. Yet another comment asked if the programming had changed on Imhotep because the difference between grand opening and today is so substantial.
The ride as a whole is still a blast and only die-hard fans like me would notice the difference, but there are a lot of die-hard fans when it comes to Universal Studios and I am glad to now know that others are thinking the same thing. I wonder if Universal will pay attention to these comments? Now that WWOHP is up and running, Universal Resort needs to:
1. Refurbish and paint Hulk.
2. Do some work on River Adventure.
3. Fix Imhotep.
Of course, right now their hand has been forced by the recent fire in Toon Lagoon, so Dudley's is getting the immediate attention. But it would be nice to see some updates soon.
